The Museum of the American Quilter’s Society is pleased to announce the 18 winning quilts of the 2006 Dresden Plate-themed "New Quilts from an Old Favorite" contest. These innovative quilts represent quilters from 15 different U.S. states as well as Canada and Germany.

Sponsored by Fairfield Processing Corporation, Janome America, Inc. and Clover Needlecraft Inc., this international contest challenges quiltmakers to create original quilts based on a specific quilt pattern. Inspired by the traditional pieced Dresden Plate pattern, the quiltmakers have modified the design in imaginative ways, providing a wonderful look at the skills, techniques and creativity of today's quiltmakers. All finalists will be on exhibit at MAQS February 8 - May 10, 2006 and then travel to various museums through December 2007.

First place was awarded to Cathy Pilcher Sperry of Cincinnati, OH, for her quilt titled Can You Feel the Spirit. Sperry utilized machine and hand appliqué, paper piecing, bobbin writing and hand beading to create her winning entry. In her eye-popping quilt, a three-dimensional checkerboard that is in turn surrounded by a wave border frames Dresden Plate images on a swirling ground of Flying Geese blocks.

The design of the second place quilt, Reinventing the Wheel, by Sherri Bain Driver of Tucson, AZ, incorporates ikat, batik, and hand-dyed fabrics. Her intricately pieced Dresden Plate rosettes are created by machine and hand techniques. The third place winner, Nadine Ruggles of Gerlingen, Germany, sewed Paisley Pavane. She pieced spinning Dresden Plates by a bargello method and accented them with machine-quilted paisley motifs sparkling with crystals.

Fourth place winner was A Plate of Pineapples, by Julia Graber of Brooksville, MS, and the fifth place winner was The Dazzling, Dresden, Doodle by Polly Dawn Yoder of Greenwood, DE. All of the quilts reflect the imagination and skill of these creative quiltmakers.
