The NATIONAL QUILT MUSEUM, Museum of the American Quilter’s Society, is pleased to announce the 18 winning quilts of the 2008 Sawtooth-themed "New Quilts from an Old Favorite" contest. These innovative quilts represent quilters from 12 different U.S. states as well as Japan.
Sponsored by Clover Needlecraft Inc., Fairfield Processing Corporation and Janome America, Inc., this international contest challenges quiltmakers to create original quilts based on a specific quilt pattern. Inspired by the traditional pieced Sawtooth pattern, the quiltmakers have modified the design in imaginative ways, providing a wonderful look at the skills, techniques and creativity of today's quiltmakers. All quilt finalists will be on exhibit at MAQS March 28 – June 12, 2008 and then travel to various museums through December 2009.
First place was awarded to Claudia Clark Myers and Marilyn Badger of Duluth, MN, for their quilt titled Berry Patch. The classic Sawtooth block takes new shape through combination of curved piecing, fused appliqué with satin stitch, invisible machine appliqué, machine embroidery and machine quilting. Set on a background of detailed free-motion quilting, Myers and Badger’s quilt is an asymmetrical layout with the traditional pointed Sawtooth design.
The design of the second place quilt, Web of Life, by Ann Horton of Redwood Valley, CA, is a boldly colored tropical design using the Sawtooth block to create a spider’s web surrounded by embroidered wildlife. Ann L. Peterson of Aurora, CO, used warm variations of brown to produce the third place winner, Carmelized Sawblades. Using a combination of machine couching and machine quilting, she made a 3-D effect of Sawtooth blocks cutting through each other.
Fourth place winner was Beyond the Sea by Nancy Brown and Jill Bryant of Oakland, CA. This duo used the Sawtooth block to create teeth of big fish chasing smaller fish. The fifth place winner was Lemon-Lime by Nancy Lambert of Pittsburgh, PA. Lambert used a mix of the traditional Sawtooth variations with satin-stitched embroidery in shades of yellow and green.
