EXPLORE ART & CREATIVITY

The National Quilt Museum is a great place for children of all ages and backgrounds to explore their creative side. There are three amazing galleries that exhibit more than 150 quilts for children to experience. Guided tours of our galleries teach the basics of quiltmaking. They learn what a “quilt sandwich” is and different forms of quilting stitches. Children are introduced to contemporary quiltmaking and are challenged to compare and contrast the quilts they see at our museum with the quilts they might see in their own home. Students will expand their knowledge of math, art, design and history through quilts.

Pre-scheduled groups of children enjoy free admission. Creative hands-on activities may be added to the tour at a small fee per student. Our hands-on activities options are described with photo examples below. Allow an additional 30-40 minutes for a hands-on activity.

Children’s Hands-On Activities
Begin your visit to The National Quilt Museum with an interactive tour of our galleries and then plan to stay for a creative hands-on experience. You may choose from the three hands-on activities below, or we can customize a project to fit with you curriculum! Just ask when you schedule a tour.

Quilt Block Designer

Students will enjoy designing their own quilt
block with fabric, no sewing required. Students
will take home the blocks they create.
$1 per student.
Paper Folded Quilt Star

This folded paper quilt project incorporates
math and color concepts that will challenge
and excite students. Every student will make
a paper star quilt to keep.
$1 per student.

Leaf Printed Wall Hanging

Leaf-printed Wall-Hanging
Create a wall hanging with leaves. Use the chlorophyll contained in leaves to print on fabric. Place the leaf under a layer of fabric and use a hammer to pound the fabric. Watch
the outline and imprint of the leaf appear as you pound. After printing, materials will be provided to create a wall hanging with the leaf printed fabric.

This project is best offered during late spring, summer and early fall. The pounding is done outdoors and is therefore dependent on weather conditions and fresh leaves.

$1 per student.

CHAPERONS SUPERVISION REQUIRED
Age 14 or under: one for every 6 students
Age 15-18: one for every 10 students.
Larger groups may be divided into smaller groups for touring. Your confirmation will indicate whether your group will be divided. Chaperons must remain in the same galleries with their children. Photography and touching of the quilts is not permitted.
